The purpose of a harmonic balancer is to absorb crankshaft vibrations. Over time the internal layers of a balancer can deteriorate causing the assembly to shift, deform or break. This causes belt misalignment, engine vibrations and can ultimately result in engine failure. When the harmonic balancer is broken, it must be replaced. ATP Harmonic Balancers
